This series of narrative illustration was created for the tale of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

The first image is Rapunzel's mother pregnant with Rapunzel. She is such an interesting character and somehow I am strongly attracted to her. Although she is not normally treated as a big part, I wanted to feature her as an unmissable character for the tale.

Naturally, being the birth mother of Rapunzel, she must have long beautiful hair. Also I had her hair up and braided as she is a married woman unlike Rapunzel.

The second image is Rapunzel herself with her hair untied. Her hair is normally braided and she only undoes her hair when someone is climbing up the tower to meet her, using her hair. I wanted to keep her facial expression quite ambiguous so that the viewers would have to wonder whether she is helping her sorceress mother or her lover climb up the tower with her untied hair after this moment of preparation.

The third image depicts the scene where Rapunzel's hair is cut off by the sorceress mother. I wanted to capture the moment of her beautiful hair falling to the floor after being cut. I included the scissors too in order to show that the sorceress mother is also in shock of what she has done and dropping the scissors as the result of her deep sorrow.

All the images are originally drawn in black & white and coloured afterwards digitally using Photoshop.
